Vieques, a paradise island located east of Puerto Rico, more specifically 42 km from Humacao, is much more than spectacular beaches and calm, crystal-clear waters. With rich biodiversity and impressive landscapes, this small Caribbean treasure is a refuge for wildlife and a must-see destination for nature and adventure lovers.

This place is home to a pristine wildlife sanctuary, unexplored spaces and 3 bioluminescent beaches, one of them considered the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet. Vieques is also home to an incredible natural treasure: the National Wildlife Refuge, which covers more than 60% of the island. This site encompasses a variety of ecosystems, from stunning bays to dense mangrove forests, salt flats and scenic trails.

The above makes Vieques a perfect destination for nature lovers and outdoor activity enthusiasts. Here you can enjoy exciting hikes, explore different beaches, scuba diving, sailing and many more activities.

If you want to know one of the most spectacular islands in the Caribbean, keep reading and discover the natural and cultural treasures that make Vieques another special place in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico.

The brightest and largest bioluminescent bay in the world: Mosquito Bay

One of the most impressive natural wonders of Vieques is Mosquito Bay (we already mentioned it previously in our entry Puerto Rico and its luminescent beaches ). For those who don't know, Vieques is home to the brightest and largest bioluminescent bay in the world.

Mosquito Bay is a natural treasure of incomparable beauty. Despite its modest size, it is recognized worldwide for hosting one of the most surprising phenomena in nature. Mosquito Beach stands out as one of the brightest bioluminescent beaches in the world, a title that has earned it a place in the prestigious Guinness Book of Records. The magic of its waters illuminated by microorganisms creates a unique and fascinating spectacle that you cannot miss.

How can you live this unique experience? The best way to do this is through an organized kayak or boat trip. Sailing through the calm waters of the bay will allow you to witness this amazing phenomenon up close.

Sun Bay Vieques

Sun Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Vieques, with its half-moon shape, turquoise waters and soft sand lined with palm trees. Thanks to the low influx of people and all the comforts that any visitor could wish for, it is ideal to relax and enjoy the Caribbean sun.

Recognized as one of the most accessible beaches in Vieques and the only one with public facilities, it has become a popular destination for adventurers who come to the island. The waters are calm, with gentle waves, which makes it an ideal place for swimming, especially at its eastern end. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the coral reefs, which are home to an incredible diversity of marine life, and take a leisurely stroll along the shore and take in the stunning views of the horizon.

Sun Bay stretches for approximately 3 kilometers and is rarely crowded. Despite this, it has services such as public bathrooms, showers, camping areas, lifeguards and food stalls. Additionally, the picturesque town of Esperanza, with its variety of bars and restaurants, is located a short distance from the beach, giving visitors even more options to enjoy their stay in this beautiful corner of the Caribbean.

Black Beach Vieques

For adventurers in search of virgin landscapes and unique experiences, Playa Negra is the perfect destination. Located in the south of the island, in the town of Esperanza, it is known for its dark volcanic sand and crystal clear waters.

Luckily for visitors, getting to Playa Negra is easy, since you only have to follow a small path, seeing how the sand transforms from white to black as we get closer. Likewise, the views offered by the large rock formations found near the beach are not to be missed.

This beach offers a calm and serene environment where you can enjoy nature in its wildest state. Precisely for this reason, this beach does not have facilities of any kind, so we recommend staying well hydrated and protected at all times, so it is important to bring water, snacks, sunscreen and insect repellent during your visit.

Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, which covers more than 60% of the island, is one of nine refuges of its type located in the Caribbean and a natural sanctuary that protects a wide variety of habitats, such as mangroves, wetlands, tropical forests and virgin beaches.

Home to a great diversity of bird, reptile and mammal species, this sanctuary offers the opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural environment and learn about the importance of conserving these unique ecosystems.

Conde de Mirasol Fortress

If you want to learn more about the history of Vieques you have to explore Fortín Conde de Mirasol, an old Spanish fortress located on a small hill and built in the 19th century to protect the island from pirate attacks.

Today this historic monument houses a museum displaying historical artifacts, interactive displays and exhibits that chronicle the island's rich history and its strategic importance in the region, from colonial times to the present day.

Visitors can explore the different rooms of the fort, which include former prison cells, ammunition warehouses, and strategically placed observation platforms that offer panoramic views of the island and its surroundings. Additionally, the fort hosts cultural events and educational activities that provide an enriching experience for the entire family.

Punta Mulas Lighthouse

Another highlight of Vieques is the Faro de Puntas Mulas (Punta Mulas Lighthouse), a historic structure that has guided sailors along the island's coasts for more than a century. Built in the 19th century and located on the northern tip of Vieques, this lighthouse is a reminder of the historical and cultural importance of this Caribbean island.

The Punta Mulas Lighthouse offers visitors not only stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, but also a window into Vieques' maritime past. In addition, it is the perfect place to watch the sun set over the Caribbean horizon.
