Small Actions, Big differences: Park Royal Hotels & Resorts joins International Coastal Cleanup Day

Sustainability 23/09/2024

Oceans cover more than 70% of our planet. Within their depths resides an immense variety of organisms that weave a network of life essential for human well-being. These bodies of water not only regulate extreme climates but also produce at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe, thanks to the photosynthesis of phytoplankton. Not to mention, the fish from the oceans are a vital food source for millions of people. But despite their grandeur, oceans face a serious threat: pollutants such as chemicals, oil, and plastic waste from beaches jeopardize their conservation. To understand the magnitude of the problem, it is enough to note that in Mexico alone, there are 11,122 kilometers of coastlines along the Caribbean, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico, which daily accumulate thousands of plastic wastes. Considering this reality, Park Royal Hotels & Resorts is aware of the urgency to protect our oceans; that’s why we want to share with you an international day dedicated to raising awareness about marine life care through beach and coastline cleanups. We will tell you how this day reflects our commitment to sustainability practices in our resorts and how you can join us to create a greener future and ensure a better tomorrow for our oceans.

Making a Difference: International Coastal Cleanup Day

In 1986, the first edition of International Coastal Cleanup Day was held by Ocean Conservancy (a non-profit organization dedicated to ocean and marine life protection) in response to the excessive use of disposable plastics. This event, now celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September, has become a key for conservation and raising awareness about the negative impact of disposable plastics on marine species such as turtles, fish, and reefs. To date, Ocean Conservancy continues to fight to keep plastic pollution at bay, stating: “Every bottle, every straw, every piece of trash you clean up can lead to a cleaner, healthier ocean”. With this in mind, on September 21, 2024, International Coastal Cleanup Day will be celebrated, and at Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable actions that have a significant impact on our planet, starting with the beaches.

Leaving a positive impact

At Park Royal Hotels & Resorts, we understand the importance of caring for our oceans and beaches, so we reaffirm our commitment to this cause through the Royal Planet sustainability pillar and align with the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI), which focuses on reducing single-use plastics. That’s why we have implemented amenity dispensers in every room and installed water dispensers and reusable bottles. These actions have resulted in saving 346,675 water bottles just in the first half of 2024, and best of all, you were part of this change. But our efforts to prevent beach pollution don’t stop there; the Funtastic Team organizes beach clean-up events in which you can participate, not only on International Coastal Cleanup Day but continuously. In this way, you are not only contributing to beach care but also helping marine fauna, such as turtles, that are affected by disposable plastic waste.

Where to Clean Beaches

If you are interested in participating in beach cleanups or other sustainable activities after learning about Royal Planet's sustainable initiatives', we recommend three beaches where you can vacation responsibly with Park Royal Hotels & Resorts.

Playa Gaviota Azul: Located along the Caribbean waters, this beach is very popular for its white, soft sand and relaxed atmosphere. Volunteers from Cancun Sailing often gather to collect plastics along the hotel zone. You can join them to be part of the change and then relax the rest of the day on our comfortable loungers at Grand Park Royal Cancun, our iconic resort just a short walk away.

Playas de Cozumel: On this small island, you can volunteer with Brigada Ixpalbarco, a family project focused on cleaning beaches in areas where sea turtles' nest. Later, you can connect with the Caribbean at the comfort of Grand Park Royal Cozumel, which offers exclusive beach access and is very close to the Paraíso coral reef.

Bahías de Huatulco: The Huatulco Clean Beaches Committee constantly organizes sustainable activities that improve the quality of Huatulco’s beaches. You can get in touch with them to learn about their waste collection activities and then enjoy our All-Inclusive Park Royal Beach Huatulco resort with a spectacular view of Tangolunda Bay.

Beaches and oceans need our help to stay clean and healthy. What better way to contribute than staying at a place that promotes responsible tourism and environmental care. Stay with Park Royal Hotels & Resorts and let’s make a difference together. We look forward to you enjoying an unforgettable stay.
