La Quebrada in Acapulco, a superhero show
Entertainment 24/01/2023
La Quebrada is a cliff located in the port of Acapulco, Guerrero state, in southern Mexico. Every day, the so-called cliff divers risk their lives by jumping into the sea. Do you know how big the Acapulco ravine is? The platform, from where the jumps are made, is 35 meters high and the Quebrada is 45 meters, a length of seven meters wide and four meters deep (at high tide).
The show begins when the diver ascends between the cracks in the cliff, using torches when night falls, until reaching the platform where the Sanctuary is located. The danger of the jumps is based on the fact that the diver must study the waves, the tide and the wind before jumping into the void.
The jumps of the divers can be seen from a viewpoint, which is accessed through stairs with a railing and/or a restaurant, where you can taste Mexican cuisine while you watch the show. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe is located at the top of the cliff, where divers pray to the virgin before jumping.
Do you want to see the divers of La Quebrada? The show times are at 1:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and can be seen from the viewpoint, the restaurant or from a boat.
The Quebrada de Acapulco, has not been created naturally, it is the result of being dynamited (originally, it was a hill). If we go back to the year 1799, the heat caused diseases such as cholera and scurvy, so it was decided to open a channel to allow ventilation in the area.
This project was called “Abrá de San Nicolás”, but it could not be finished due to lack of financial resources. The works were resumed in 1876, but again, due to lack of money, the canal could not be connected to the city. Therefore, the name of La Quebrada is due to the way in which the unfinished gap was left.
The natives, after fishing, swimming and/or diving in the area, challenge each other by throwing themselves from the highest peak. What began as a hobby, to see who was the bravest, has become a show of heroism. In 1934 the famous divers of La Quebrada de Acapulco were born.
The first diver to jump from the highest peak was Rigoberto Apac Ríos, later Lucio Rodríguez (la Gaviota) and Emilio Ramírez (el macho Negro) would repeat this fact, perfecting their jumps. However, the most popular diver is Raúl García Bravo, known as the "Chupetas", who holds the Guinness Record of 35,000 dives and who participated in more films. Another Guinness Record was Iris Álvarez, the youngest diver to jump from a height of 18 meters.
The spectacle of the waterfalls of La Quebrada and its attractive location have turned this place into the setting for various movies. National and international actors and actresses have found their home or vacation destination in Acapulco, for example: John Weismuller, Rita Hayworth; Silvia Pinal, Tin Tan, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyhn Monroe and Cantinflas.
